Logical Train
I enjoyed solving this puzzle as a high-schooler in the early 1960s, so much so that a version of it in The Moscow Puzzles [Dover, 1992] brought instant recognition and a desire to share it with you. - Uncle Bob.
On the DC to New York train are three passengers named Pete, Sid, and Ivan. By coincidence the engineer, conductor, and fireman have the same three first names, but not necessarily in that order.
a. Ivan the Passenger lives in DC,
and Pete the Passenger pulls down $4000 per month income.
b. The conductor lives halfway between DC and NYC.
c. The passenger with the same name as the conductor lives in NYC.
d. The passenger who lives nearest to the conductor earns exactly three times
what the conductor makes.
e. Sid, a member of the crew, recently beat the fireman at billiards.
What is the name of the engineer?
