Lucky 13 Tennis

Haverhill Doubles Tennis Results Have-A-Rec, the Haverhill Recreation Association, closed its tournament season with Men's and Women's Doubles on August 18th and 19th respectively.

On Saturday eight men's teams vied for boasting rights; Steve Elliott of Ryegate and partner Tom Burnham of Newbury will have such rights for the coming year. They edged out Mike McAllister and son Eric of Meriden in the final match.

The men's matches were all hotly contested, with three of the nine contests going the limit to 10-9. The comeback of the day was staged by Steve Wellington's son Wes, here from Los Angeles on holiday, and partner Art Mudge of Haverhill, when they overcame 2-7 and 3-8 deficits to Bob Mead and partner Len Kaplow of Bradford, Vermont, to win by a score of 10-9.

We welcomed the entry of long-time Haverhill tennis booster Pat Wolfe of Monroe and her partner Theresa Lavoie of East Ryegate in the Women's Doubles tournament. That contest turned out to be just as exciting as the Men's Doubles, with the top three teams finishing 21-20-19 in total games won in the round robin.

Besting the team of Lee Sherman of Fairlee and Marie Greene of Orford, was the sister-in-law team of Beth and Karen Wellington from Massachusetts and California respectively. The were cheered by the parents of Wes and Beth, namely, Stephen and Ruth Wellington who are long-time Haverhill residents.

The tennis courts at Haverhill Corner were the site of the 13th annual Mixed Doubles tournament hosted by the Haverhill Recreation Association (Have-A-Rec) on July 21 and 22. We were fortunate to have twelve teams participate and provide us with excellent doubles play. Saturday playdowns were in brackets of four and resulted in three teams “surviving” to Sunday. Those three teams, two father-daughter combinations and a third which could be characterized as mentor-protege, met in four hours of round-robin play and provided onlookers with many thrilling battles for hard-earned points.

Prior to Sunday play, a moment of silent reflection in honor of friend and tennis benefactor John McGiffert was requested by tournament director Bob Mead, and observed by the 25 players and spectators in attendance. Later his widow Pat McGiffert of San Antonio, Texas, and a Lake Armington summer resident, stopped by to say hello to old friends and meet some of the players.

The first round-robin match saw Tom Burnham and daughter Elizabeth, of Newbury, outlast Ted Craver and daughter Maryjo Wood of Bradford, Vermont, ten games to nine. This result left both teams in contention because total games for the final round would determine the champions. In the second match, Mark Gleicher and St Johnsbury Academy senior Emily Pratt, both of Groton, out-powered the tenacious Burnham team 10-5. Gleicher and Pratt made counting the games a moot exercise when they handed the veteran doubles team of Craver and Wood a 10-4 defeat. The play in all three sets was at a skill level higher than previously witnessed in Haverhill, and the strongly competitive, yet considerate, character of all six players was always in evidence.

Fifty-four entrants participated in the three tennis weekends this year, including those in casts, braces and crutches, who either played regardless, or enjoyed the cookout at the least.

In the July Mixed Doubles, Mark Gleicher and Emily Pratt of Ryegate defeated runners-up Tom and Elizabeth Burnham of Newbury, for the top prize.

On August 20, fifteen players enjoyed mixing up their usual doubles partnerships and rotating through the two courts in four-game mini sets. After two hours, the players of middle age (those in their teens and twenties), stayed on the court for more action, while the elderly and the very young retired to the Mead's place for some shade, food, and drink. This event continues to boast an unofficial age-span record, with perennial 85-plusser Marty Weiner of Hall's Pond playing alongside Adam Hatch of Haverhill, a freshman at Plymouth State College.

The final events, Men's and Women's Doubles, took place on the weekend of August 19, and featured some outstanding competition. Polly Southworth of Vershire and Lee Sherman of Florida repeated as Women's winners against three other very competitive teams

Eighteen-year-old Eric McAllister of Meriden and his ever-youthful Uncle Scott of Woodsville, newly elected President of Have-A-Rec, came from five games down and squeaked by with a 10-9 game victory in the finals versus Arthur Mudge of Haverhill and his partner Ted Thompson of Piermont.
